The Kotpad is one of the rarest weaves in India. It is woven by only a handful of weavers living in the remote interiors of the eastern Indian state of Odisha. Weaving the Kotpad takes time because it all starts with the creation of fabric dyes, using natural ingredients, sourced locally.
The distinctive earthy red hue used in this weave is derived from the red dye extracted from the local 'Aal' or Banyan tree. The process of preparing this dye takes several months. The motifs woven into the Kotpad are also fascinating. They reflect the signature motifs of the local tribes.
